Importance of Tire Storage:
Tires are durable and resilient, but it is important to store them in the right conditions. Tires stored improperly may lead to premature removal from the vehicle or may compromise performance. Correct tire storage should not be underestimated or ignored since it is an important factor in a tire’s service life.
It is especially useful for people who often change winter tires and summer tires to understand how to store their tires properly.
Procedure for Proper Tire Storage:
1. Tires need to be stored in a manner that is free from tension, compression or other forces that might cause distortion.
When store tires that are not mounted on the rim, the best storage method is to place the tires upright in a storage rack. If a storage rack is not available, tires may be stacked on top of each other, but care must be taken to not stack too many tires in a single stack.
When storing tires on the floor, place cardboard or something underneath them to prevent the tire from discoloring the flooring and to avoid exposure to moisture.
2. Avoid Ozone and Heat
Tires should be stored in a cool place, away from harmful ozone-producing electric motors or sources of heat such as hot pipes.
3. Avoid Rain and Moisture
Tires should be stored indoors where water cannot collect inside the tire. Direct contact with moist floor surfaces should be avoided by placing cardboard between the tire and the floor.
4. Avoid Oil and Organic Solvents
Storage surfaces should be free of oils, grease, gasoline, or other substances which can deteriorate the rubber.
5. Reduce Inflation Pressure
When tires are stored mounted on the rim, the tires should be deflated to 50% of their proper use pressure and store with a valve cap on the valve.
